DIY Hair Scrubs: Benefits and Reasons To Switch to Homemade

Using a homemade hair scrub can help your hair be more nourished and hydrated thanks to the natural and eco-friendly ingredients.

If you are looking for simple recipes with natural ingredients to create your own DIY hair scrub, you are in the right place to get started. A hair scrub is a health routine, as well as a beauty one, if you want to keep your scalp hydrated and fresh.

Between dyes, sweat, hairstyles and hats our scalps can become dry and fragile. A DIY hair scrub can help it return to being nourished and hydrated, brighter and healthier. Making your own is not only healthier, but also an eco-friendly choice. Instead of buying scrubs with a ton of packaging that is just pure waste, you can reuse a jar and use products you have on hand.

Read on to learn more about the benefits of making homemade hair scrub and test out a few recipes to get you started.

How to make a DIY hair scrub

DIY hair scrub can be created from simple ingredients that you may already have in the fridge or pantry like salt, lemon and baking soda. Making a homemade scalp scrub is easy – and cost-effective. Best part is that you will know every ingredient that you are putting on your head!

To create a hair scrub you need to put together at least 2 ingredients, better if 3, that have these characteristics:

  1. Graininess can be coffee grounds, sugar, salt or baking soda
  2. Hydration can be coconut milk or aloe gel
  3. Nourishment can be a type of oil or liquid vitamin

Mixing your 3 chosen ingredients together will create a paste to rub on the scalp that will feel like heaven. You can follow up a scrub with one of our favorite DIY coconut based beauty products, a coconut oil based conditioner bar! Talk about extra smooth and shine!

Here are a few DIY hair scrub recipes to get you started.

1. DIY purifying baking soda hair scrub

A bicarbonate hair scrub uses the abrasive power of baking soda combined with lemon juice to achieve a truly purifying hair cleaner.

Below is a basic recipe for a baking soda hair scrub.

This scrub is good for those who have skin that produces excess sebum or for those who suffer from dandruff .

How do you use scalp scrub?

Once your DIY hair scrub is ready, it is very simple to use.

  • Apply it to wet hair
  • Massage the scalp with circular movements to begin microcirculation benefits
  • For a stronger effect you can leave it on for up to 15 minutes
  • Rinse very well and continue with your normal shampoo

As you can see, this is a very easy and quick beauty routine for your hair!

How often should you do a hair scrub?

A hair scrub is a way to purify and cleanse the scalp, but you should not do a scrub more than a couple of times a month if your hair is normal or dry. People with oily hair can do a hair scrub once a week.

This is because there is no need to stress the skin with too many treatments, respecting the natural production of sebum of our scalp.

Why use a DIY hair scrub?

Using a hair scrub is a great way to keep your scalp exfoliated. This is especially important during periods when you sweat more or when you are forced to wear hats or tight hairstyles more often.

Read on to discover in detail the benefits associated with the practice of hair exfoliation.

  • Skin is purified by the massage with the paste that is created from the granular and hydrating ingredients.
  • The nourishing ingredients enrich it and help it to have stronger and healthier hair.
  • If you have oily skin, sebum production is balanced by using a hair scrub, and the exfoliating effect helps eliminate dead cells.
  • The homemade aspect keeps it free of chemicals and additives that can cause skin issues or may be toxic.

If you have any kind of irritated skin problems it may not be advisable to use a scrub, especially with ingredients such as lemon or salt.  I highly recommend only using any of the recipes in this article if your scalp is generally healthy and irritation free. Some natural elements, like lemon, can aggravate skin that may have irritations.

So, are you ready to remove the chemicals and additives from your hair care routine? I hope this article inspires you to try and make your own hair scrub and see the results for yourself.
