DIY Toothpaste: Make It at Home with 3 Quick and Easy Recipes

DIY toothpaste to replace the classic tube toothpaste?

Absolutely an option! In this article you will discover several recipes to create your own DIY toothpaste at home with just a few simple ingredients.

For proper oral hygiene brushing your teeth after every meal is essential, but can it also be more sustainable? By making your own homemade toothpaste it can be!

Now, before we kick off with some toothpaste recipes, there is a disclaimer we need to make. While you can make your own toothpaste, it is best to check with your dentist first! Everyone has different issues and needs when it comes to keeping teeth healthy. Some may find baking soda too abrasive, especially with sensitive teeth, others may have gum issues with may need a different kind of cleaning. We are not dentists – but we checked with our own before using these recipes and based on our families teeth, our dentist approved our options! Yours might not!

Now, on to the recipes for making your own toothpaste.

DIY Toothpaste vs. Tube Toothpaste

In recent years it has been estimated that up to 20 billion tubes are thrown away every year across the planet!

This is a great damage to the environment since each tube is composed of a mix of plastics and aluminum that make it difficult to recycle.

Some companies are starting to take action, but it is not enough to cancel out all the damage caused by using toothpaste in a tube.

In fact, in addition to plastic waste, recyclable or not, every toothpaste on the market has a chemical composition that is not at all eco-logical and damages our organism as well as the ecosystem.

Chemicals like Trichlorosan and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate act on our endocrine system and, together with sweeteners and foaming agents, create a truly toxic mix!

Furthermore, some classic toothpastes contain microspheres (needless to say, plastic) that end up contaminating the water and therefore the various marine species.

Choosing a homemade eco-friendly toothpaste helps to avoid all these damages, and self-production also saves money, which is always nice these days!

So let’s go and see how to create our own eco-friendly DIY toothpaste!

How do you make homemade toothpaste?

To create our own DIY toothpaste, we need very few natural ingredients that last a long time and have many beneficial properties for our smile and in general for our body.

Some of these ingredients are already in our homes and are used for different purposes such as bicarbonate which has a whitening, anti-inflammatory and antacid action.

Other ingredients such as clay, white or green ventilated, coconut oil and essential oils may have to be found but the game is worth the candle!

Let’s now see how to use these ingredients to create our own homemade toothpaste!

1. DIY Coconut Oil Toothpaste Recipe

Coconut oil is a natural plant ingredient with a thousand properties, excellent both for personal care and as a substitute for cooking oil.

For this recipe we will use strictly 100% pure, cold-pressed coconut oil. This oil is a liquid when it is hot and solidifies when it is cold.

In the first case, just add a few more spoonfuls of clay, in the second, a few drops of water, preferably distilled, to dilute it a little.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon of ventilated white or green clay
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 10 drops of essential oils (such as Tea Tree oil, Eucalyptus or Peppermint)

Instructions

  1. Mix baking soda and clay
  2. Mix essential oils and coconut oil
  3. Combine everything in a glass jar with an airtight seal

To use the toothpaste just take a small amount of the mixture with a spatula or a wooden or plastic teaspoon (not metal) and place it on the toothbrush. Brush as you normally would.

We recommend using this DIY toothpaste about twice a week, alternating it with one without baking soda so as not to stress the tooth enamel too much.

2. DIY Powder Toothpaste Recipe

Another way to make our own homemade eco-friendly toothpaste is to make it in powder form.

It may seem strange at first, but all you need to do is wet the toothbrush with water before putting a small amount of powdered toothpaste on it using a wooden spoon and that’s it!

The eco-friendly DIY powder toothpaste lasts much longer than the paste one and with an initial expense for the ingredients you can remake it for more than a year!

Ingredients

  • ¼ of a handful of dried and crumbled sage and thyme leaves
  • ¾ of white clay
  • A few drops of peppermint essential oil

All you have to do is mix everything with a wooden spoon in a glass jar where you will store your toothpaste.

This powder contains no baking soda and is perfect for those looking for something less abrasive. If you have sensitive teeth, this is the best homemade option.

3. Homemade Toothpaste For Kids Recipe

Even the little ones can use homemade toothpaste, in fact it is even healthier for them if they were to ingest a little of it. Commercial toothpastes with their dangerous chemical compositions can be unhealthy if ingested.

This particular recipe is for a DIY toothpaste that is also good for adults!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons liquid glycerin
  • 2 not full tablespoons of baking soda
  • 1 or 2 tablespoons of ventilated white clay
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt powder
  • 3 drops of orange essential oil
  • 2 drops of peppermint essential oil

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients except essential oils
  2. Once paste is created add a few drops of the essential oils
  3. Store in a tightly sealed glass jar

This toothpaste lasts for a month at room temperature.

We love our DIY toothpaste as much as our homemade hair scrubs! The feeling of no chemicals making it into our bodies makes for a happy – and healthy family.
